New insights into the genetics of primary open-angle glaucoma based on meta-analyses of intraocular pressure and optic disc characteristics

Item does not contain fulltext Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), the most common optic neuropathy, is a heritable disease. Siblings of POAG cases have a ten-fold increased risk of developing the disease. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic nerve head characteristics are used clinically to predict POAG risk. We conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of IOP and optic disc parameters and validated our findings in multiple sets of POAG cases and controls. Using imputation to the 1000 genomes (1000G) reference set, we identified 9 new genomic regions associated with vertical cup-disc ratio (VCDR) and 1 new region associated with IOP. Effects of Early Postfiltration Ocular Hypotony on Visual Acuity, Long-term Intraocular Pressure Control, and Posterior Segment Morphology

Purpose To determine whether hypotony after filtration surgery has any influence on visual acuity and intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering. Patients and methods We prospectively investigated 43 eyes of 43 patients undergoing trabeculectomy without the use of antimetabolites for 12 months. Results The lowest postoperative IOP valued 4.9 +/- 3.6 mm Hg (range, 0-14 mm Hg). It correlated statistically significant with the IOP 6 weeks (P = 0.016), 6 months (P = 0.009), and 1 year after surgery (P = 0.027). Knowledge about glaucoma in the unselected population: a German survey.

Purpose To determine the general population's knowledge about glaucoma. Materials and methods A representative survey of the German population was conducted in which 2,742 men and women were interviewed face to face. The sample was matched with the German population for age, sex, education, income, and other factors. Questions were asked concerning the nature, occurrence, possible risk factors, and course of glaucoma. Results Fifty-one percent of the population had an active knowledge of the term "glaucoma" and 75% had a passive knowledge of the term. The aim of this study was to show that complex antibody patterns against retinal antigens in sera of patients with glaucoma, found in previous studies, are autoantibodies against human antigens.Sera of 179 patients were collected at the Department of Ophthalmology (University of Mainz, Germany): non-glaucomatous control patients (n=45), primary open-angle glaucoma (n=45), ocular hypertension (n=44), and normal tension glaucoma patients (n=45). Risk factors of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The Casteldaccia Eye Study.

A case-control study was planned as a part of the Casteldaccia Eye Study in order to investigate about risk factors of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. Cases were 44 subjects with glaucoma or intraocular pressure of 24 mm Hg or more. Controls were 220 subjects with intraocular pressure of 20 mm Hg or less and no signs of glaucoma. Falsely elevated intraocular pressure due to increased central corneal thickness

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether ocular hypertensive subjects have a higher central corneal thickness than other individuals. METHODS: In this prospective study, 48 subjects with ocular hypertension, 63 patients with open-angle glaucoma, 56 nonglaucomatous patients with diabetes mellitus, and 106 control subjects were evaluated.
